Today the business is run by Bob (Robert) Cadry, along with his sons Ari and Jared. Together they continue the legacy, value and tradition of the Cadrys business with renewed passion and modern injection, forward into the future.
Our historic sandstone showrooms were built in the 1850s, known as the Rushcutters Bay Hotel during this era The building sits boldly on the corner of New South Head Road and Glenmore Road, a conjunction historically known as the gateway to the Eastern Suburbs. In the 1850s this was a trading place for the reeds and rushes cut by local convicts, used for roof thatching during colonial times. Since acquiring the property various parts of the building has been carefully restored, unveiling the original sandstone which was concealed by the pub tiles in the 1920s.
We have planes to complete a major refurbishment in the New Year to enable us to accommodate and consolidate our Contemporary & Custom Gallery with our Classic Showroom, and inject new life into parts of this historic building which has been a little neglected over the years.
History is often delivered in the form of written language, but at times it translates into the medium of art. At Cadrys, we know that an authentic handwoven rug is an art piece carrying tradition imbued with historical significance. The beauty and mystery of our woven art acts to transport you to a time and place beyond our own. Every year, you manage to wow your clientele with something spectacular, tell us where you drew inspiration from for this year’s new collections?
The POLONAISE collection is based on old carpets that were made in Isfahan some 400 years ago on behalf of the Polish royal family. These are very special pieces, of which there is only a handful left in the world today. Although these rugs are knotted according to Persian tradition, the patterns incorporate European style elements that are not known in classical Oriental carpet culture. If you look closely you will discover royal crowns, signet rings and lilies. The color scheme is also influenced by the Occident. These carpets, custom made in the 17th century, fascinated me, so that I started reviving the old patterns and interpreting them in a modern way with my alienation effects.
Another collection is Spectrum, where we focus on light. Light is comprised of many colors, which is shown off in a particularly spectacular fashion in the northern lights, visible in winter months in the far north. This spectacle of nature was an inspiration for the JAN KATH collection SPECTRUM, as were the myths and fairy tales about dancing lights above gloomy moors and in dark pine forests. Knot by knot, the spectrum of light is translated into wool and silk, and that fleeting moment is captured in the carpet so that the beholder can let themselves be caught up in it. The realization of this design, which is hand-knotted in Nepal, is intricately complicated and entails up to 40 different colors that bleed into each other in a soft gradient. In SPECTRUM, Jan Kath works on a wider scale, opening up new worlds of color that could serve as a background for classic ornaments in the next step.
You recently have undertaken some major contract projects for leading fashion houses, how does working with them differ to your residential projects?
In residential projects, clients usually select designs that already exist. These are adjusted to individual customer requirements in size, color and material composition. For the large contract projects, we sit down with architects and designers and together we design a brand new manuscript, which we then continue to expand over the years. This is exciting. When it comes to logistics it is a big challenge if we equip several hundred stores almost at the same time with new carpets all over the world.
For big projects time is generally an issue. Hand-knotted, large-format carpets can not hold every timeline of an architect. This is why we have been offering hand-tufted carpets that have excellent quality, but that can be produced much faster.
Cadrys has represented Jan Kath for 10+ years now, clearly there is a loyal following to you and your collections, can you give us a hint into what we can expect next?
In 2018/19 we will continue to expand the Polonaise Collection and experiment with the designs that combine classic patterns with new templates and try out new effects.
I’m also working on a big new idea, but I do not want to reveal that much yet. Only so much: the handknotted carpet is still my medium, but in the new concept that I am planning, art and design will merge
Personally or professionally, what are you most looking forward too for the remainder of 2018?
It’s always exciting to see the new designs being shown for the first time at major fairs in Europe or the US. Will the professional audience like them? How do the end consumers react? Me personally, I am actually already much further at this point. As the design development and production of the first pieces of a new collection takes several months, in spring 2018 we already have the next collection for 2019 on the loom.

Tammy, when did your love affair with weaving and textiles begin, and how?
In 2011 after struggling to find the perfect art piece for my new home renovation I took myself to a Melbourne institution Wondoflex Yarn Craft Centre to create my own piece. When I returned to Wondoflex to show what I had completed the staff told me I had created “something special.” With this encouragement I enrolled myself in to a series of classes at the Australian Tapestry Workshop to begin my weaving journey. This is where the love affair with weaving began.
Who/What has been your biggest inspiration in this field?
Sheila Hicks is my biggest inspiration I am inspired and enthralled by her creativity everyday. Her fearless approach to her work, it is exciting, bold and meaningful.
What has been your career highlight?
Exhibiting in 2017 Milan Design Week and Miley Cyrus purchasing one of my works.
What colours/tones hues resonate with you right now?
I just completed a piece today with blues, pinks, purples and greys. However tomorrow I will be embarking on a piece filled with bright yellows, oranges, greens and hot pink and the piece after that will be natural and earthy tones! Each piece I create is so different and has its own story and the colours I work with always vary. I love this because I can never get bored. 🙂
You have collaborated with Cadrys and now Anthropologie, what’s next for Tammy Kanat?
To continue developing my work as a fiber artist, to push boundaries and tell my story through my textile art.
What have you learnt from your first rug collection to now launching your second rug collection?
Translating my woven works into a rug collection has been a challenging and exciting journey. The learning curve has been very steep. After all the time and effort we have put into fine turning the designs, I believe we have developed a very strong and unique rug collection that I am very proud of.
I can see customers appreciate the organic and natural shapes we have created and the colour palettes we selected in the designs. Keeping the collection authentic and relevant to my tapestries.
Q: You mentioned that it has been a steep learning curve, how did you find the transition from textile weaving to rug weaving?
I met Bob Cadry at my exhibition a few years back, we immediately connected. Bob’s incredible generosity for sharing his knowledge is what has made this journey so inspiring. It is this experience that has led to a wonderful friendship that gave me the opportunity to make this collection happen.
The design process was fascinating in itself, developing designs on a computer was a whole new experience for me. You literally get see your design work come alive via Galanchia design software, then onto renderings and visualizations. The amazing Cadrys design team, gave me the opportunity to operate Galanchia solo, I feel its best I stick to weaving….

Best friends to business partners, tell us about how Walter G came about?
We met in Year 7 in Sydney’s North. During and after university – we travelled extensively, particularly to places known for their textiles such as South America and Vietnam. Lauren travelled to India to do an internship as part of her degree, and Gen went to visit several times. We completely fell in love with it and the idea that they could start a textile company was born. We then moved to India for 6 months and immersed ourselves, learning everything that we could about indigo and block printing techniques living in tiny and remote villages. Upon returning to Australia, sadly both of our grandfathers Walter and George passed at a similar time. Walter G is named in their honour and the business was officially launched at Life Instyle in Sydney in 2012
Who/What has been your biggest inspiration in this field?
Being in this particular field means that we are constantly surrounded by extremely creative and inspiring people. However, if we had to pick one person who has been a constant inspiration to both of us throughout the Walter G textile journey, it would be Sally Campbell. Her textile prowess aside, Sally has the most unique way of transporting you to an ancient city or space, opening our eyes to the amazing back story of everyday objects, food, textiles and places.
What has been your career highlight?
The first sale from our debut range will forever be one of the great highlights of our careers. We had spent 6 months living off $5 a day and poured every last cent, tear and hope into that range – and peoples’ response was completely overwhelming. It was probably at that point that our dream of turning our passion into a business really crystallised. Now 6 years on, we are coming up to another great highlight – the recently collaboration with Cadrys. At the risk of sounding clichéd – we have long dreamed of doing a rug collection but knew that it was beyond our technical scope. So, to be teaming up with Australia’s premier rug producers to create a range that fuses both our skill sets and celebrates our shared love of ancient textile crafts, is truly a career highlight.
What colours/tones hues resonate with you right now?
Whilst the blood in our veins will forever run indigo, we are currently crushing on a rich guava pink (stay tuned!)
If you weren’t in the field of textiles, where would you see yourself?
It may sound trite, but we really couldn’t imagine a career without textiles.

For 25 years Paul Bangay has fulfilled his discerning clients’ aspirations for creating gardens that are expressive of the timeless elegance and classic simplicity for which he is internationally renowned.
Bangay holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Horticulture) from the University of Melbourne. In 1994 he was granted a Melbourne Arts Centre travelling scholarship to further his study of landscape design in Europe and the Americas. He won the Mobil Pegasus Award for the best contribution to the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts (1989). In 2001 Bangay was awarded the Centenary Medal for his contribution to public design projects and most recently in 2018 awarded an OAM.
Bangay’s distinctive approach has been featured in countless publications, and he is a sought-after guest on gardening and lifestyle programs. His personal insights have informed a successful series of lavish and widely anticipated books, beginning with The Defined Garden (1996) and most recently ‘The Garden At Stonefields’ (2013).
His unmistakable style, eye for detail and love of the Australian outdoors have been the inspiration for a fabulous new collection of UV stabilised rugs suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
The collection was made in collaboration with leading rug doyens the Cadry family.
Today we are pleased to shift the spotlight to Paul and share some of his insights into the world of Paul Bangay.
Tell us how your career in landscape design developed?
My love of gardens evolved from a childhood filled with parents who loved gardens, had a beautiful garden and encouraged us children to work in the garden. My father was an academic so university was encouraged thus my degree in landscape design at Melbourne university. After graduatuion I opened a boutique nursery in Toorak and then went on to start designing gardens. My career has been blessed with publishing 10 books on my work, commission’s overseas, and over 2000 gardens created in Australia.
Who/What has been your biggest inspiration in this field?
The English designer David Hicks was my greatest mentor, we were great friends and travelled extensively together looking at houses and gardens
Publishing my first book was a career highlight, seeing your work in print and protected for posterity was a huge thrill.
Being awarded a Order Of Australia medal for landscape architecture another huge thrill
Where do you draw the most inspiration from when being tasked with a new project?
The site provides me with most of my inspiration, major trees, site lines and the type of architecture of the house.
Recently you launched Fabrics with Elliot Clarke and now with Cadrys an Indoor/Outdoor Rug Collection, what’s next for Paul Bangay?

]]>At this year’s Denfair exhibition, Cadrys was delighted to unveil the newest division to its business, Cadrys Contract.
While Cadrys has been involved with many great commercial projects over its 65 years, they have never had a division directly targeting the broad contract market. However all this changed in April, when Cadrys welcomed to the business Stephen Major. With almost 15 years’ experience in the commercial flooring industry, Stephen was enlisted to develop a collection of area rugs, wall-to-wall carpets and outdoor flooring textiles, purposely sourced for the contract market.

Cadrys: What do you most love about your job?
Eva: I love the fact that the wider industry is forever changing; fashion in general is forever changing. In my business I wear a lot of different hats which allows me to fulfil many different potentials and aspects from the intricate to the at-large direction of the business. Every day is challenging, diverse and dramatic and I am so drawn to the theatre of it all.
Cadrys: As we know the interior trends are often inspired by the fashion world, what colours are coming through this season?
Eva: Specific colours this season are really bright pops of greens, yellows and reds and strong oranges. I believe these strong hues are coming through because as a society, I feel we are coming to terms with the uncertainty of our times and as this is becoming a normal way of life, as a result we’re feeling bolder and more confident in our choices. I think there’s a massive resurgence in creativity - through colour and being daring, there’s a need to really express ourselves once again and it’s definitely filtering though in aspects and pillars of interiors and personal style.
Cadrys: Your amazing house was featured in this month’s Belle, how would you describe your own interior style?
Eva: Thank you.. I would say it is similar to my personal style which is eclectic, and evolves quite frequently, depending on whatever is influencing me at the time or the mood of the day. I’m fortunate enough to have access to see so many changes in trends, it makes sense that my style and my taste evolve and change with the different influences. Stylistically I love ultra contemporary but I also really love traditional and classic. I love the concept of styling and putting things together as opposed to being dictated by one particular style... I think I’m always going to want to redecorate and refurbish and realign. It goes hand in hand with not only what I do but also my personality.
Cadrys: What’s your favourite rug in your home and why?
Eva: I have two rugs in my home that I purchased from Cadrys. One was straight off the cuff, I saw it, I loved it and bought it! The fabulous team here allowed me to trial and test, providing us with a professional service that gave us the option to make our decision with a bit of time; that level of servicing to me is everything. Its luxury, its what luxury should be, I think in Australia we’re not as familiar with luxury unless we travel, and I think a lot of the clients here as well as my own clients, travel frequently and they command a certain level of service. I love the fact one of the rugs that I bought here, took 9 months; I saw a really small piece and then we turned it into the appropriate size and it was then hand crafted to perfection.. The whole process was so special and unique. My second piece was a Florence Broadhurst – the history and references really suited the style that I was interested in, but I also recognise that maybe it’s something that I’ll move around my home. Currently it’s in my bedroom but, it will go in the kids room one day or who knows?! I love that ide of versatility and longevity.
Cadrys: When you entertain, what are your absolute must haves, before guests arrive?
Eva:, Since moving into our home I don’t really entertain to the extent that I used to, because life is super busy, but on the occasions that we do; it is usually around summer time. I love going to our frangipani tree and collecting bundles of flowers and scattering them all around with my girls. Using small tea light candles encased in eclectic candle holders or vases from various holidays throughout the table adds a lot of warmth. Handpicked frangipani’s or a flower that is important to you, adding those touches feel more authentic.
Cadrys: Parlour X has recently moved into a remarkable Sydney landmark ‘The Church’ built in 1845 on Oxford street in Paddington, how is the new location and has it changed the business?
Eva: 100%! It is going so well, we feel like as we evolved and secured all the best brands in the world, we’re able to now display them in a luxury setting and environment that really aligns with the brands that they are. It allows us to have a real synergy and harmony with our environment, which were waiting to really get to that point. We’ve had a lot of visitors from all the luxury houses abroad, so in a way, Parlour X is its own destination luxury boutique that we never had before. For our clients it’s more than just the product but it’s also about the space, the environment, the setting and the service and experience. Now that we have this opulent open space, the service feels really open too and it’s become an experience. Clients and visitors take their time and we are now equipped to offer them that luxury service that they really require.
Cadrys: You have known the Cadrys family and business for a long time, these collaborations work well for us both, why do you think?
Eva: I just think that we have simpatico and an honesty between us, because we can communicate clearly about what our needs are and what our expectations are and I think in life, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing, whether it’s a business relationship or personal, if you have really clear boundaries and clear expectations, it’s always going to be a win-win. You’re always going to be happy and it just feels pure and natural and so it’s a really cherished and valued situation. It is also a great pleasure to know that we’re working together; it makes sense and feels right.
Cadrys: What are the must haves of the winter season ahead? Bags, shoes, sunnies, brands
Eva: Balenciaga is the most sought after brand in the world right now! The designer (Demna Gvsalia) also has his own brand, Vetements. He has won all the recent awards and all the street style stars and influencers are all completely head to toe wearing Balenciaga. Demna is ground-breaking in that his taken conceptual styles and conceptual brands from the past and he’s really reinvented them in a modern way that has resonated with everybody. It has more of an intellectual approach, and I think people are wanting and yearning for that as well, because as we’ve just talked about, we’ve had a really bland period and now he’s really pushing that envelope. There is also J.W Anderson – there is not one person who doesn’t have a J.W Anderson or LOEWE Bag. It’s a little bit slower in Australia to catch on but it’s fast becoming cult. Both brands are must-have items at Parlour X and hard to come by!
Cadrys: And your winter essentials, what would be your top picks for people
Eva: Whenever I think of winter I think about the colour palette – berry, navy, black, charcoal and khaki, so the perception of colour starts to change. Even merchandising Parlour X, everything starts being a bit darker, people have a dark mindset when they think of winter, the days are shorter. So for me it’s more about the colours less than silhouettes because I think we’re going through a stage in fashion of anything goes, it’s just how you put it all together.

The brief was to develop a rug for the hallway which incorporated the colours of the very strong and graphic artwork in a subtle manner. We wanted a small scale pattern which has breaks and variation, as the space is large and the hallway quite long we didn’t want anything too regular or stripy. We used the silk in the background of the design to create an iridescent shimmer as you move over the rug. We also incorporated natural nettle to give variation in colour and strength as its used daily. The entrance hall is in the original part of the house so we wanted to keep the look classic but fresh.
The focus in the living room is on a serene neutral palette and a mix of textures. The terracotta tiled floor provides the warmth, the remaining furniture and fittings are neutral and understated. The Boro 10 rug by Jan Kath is a perfect seamless addition to a cool and sophisticated space.
]]>This incredible lounge room was the final space to be furnished in a luxury waterfront home overlooking Sydney Harbour after a 3 year construction period. The home is Modern Contemporary in style with warm stone floors throughout and bespoke joinery, light fittings and fixtures. The lounge room is sophisticated and inviting, yet not intimidating that fits the personality of its owners. Warm greys, mauves and metallic finishes are present in the furniture, and the stunning Night Garden rug, with its almost landscape painting effect, brings all the elements together.
